Developed by Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method (or simply Pilates) is an exercise system which focuses on improving core stability, abdominal strengthening, flexibility, balance and strength and tone of the body. The Pilates Method targets the postural muscles enforcing proper breathing and correct body alignment.
The principles of Pilates incorporate occupational and physical therapy techniques. Pilates helps decrease low back pain, and increase range of motion and flexibility of your joints. This system includes proper breathing techniques, spinal elongation and torso stabilization, which safely and efficiently helps to achieve the maximum results.
Pilates method is also an excellent rehabilitation system for back, knee, hip, shoulder and other body injuries.
Joseph H. Pilates Method has significantly evolved over time. Pilates exercises could be performed on a floor mat or specially designed equipment. Though the Method was created in the beginning of the 20th century, Joseph Pilates was so far ahead of his time that his Method did not begin to achieve popular recognition until after his death.
Joseph Pilates was aware of his Method and stated, “People won’t understand the brilliance of my work for 50 years.”
